Problems running VIMM & VVV (Was: 2114 chips needed?)

I'm having problems running Veni Vidi Vic! and Vici Iterum MM on my
newly expanded Vic-20. VVV loads and runs, but after the checkerboard
it freezes up -- black screen, drive LED blinking slowly, sound loops.
VIMM doesn't even start, it just sits there after i RUN.
I just finished with my memory expansion project, and it appears to
be working A-OK -- 19967 bytes free at startup, my little memory test
program[0] didn't report any errors. As the demos consistently crash
at the exact same spot I don't think it's the expansion, but you never
know...
The 1541-II I'm using has JiffyDOS, could that be a problem?

[0] pokes $55 and $aa to all addresses and complains if it doesn't
    peek back the same value
