No, the extension is not necessary. It just means that they are the plain 
files like on the CBM, not in any container format like P00, T64, D64 
or whatever.

If the program starts at $0401 the next version of VICE will be able
to autostart a BASIC prg (no matter the name) with just 
"xpet -fullscreen space_invaders". Guess what the option means :-))
That's a real cool upgrade to your Unix workstation ;-)
