Hope I'm not interrupting here.

Umm, don't get me wrong here. I'm not even trying to
pretend to know anything about PC hard drives, but it
occured to me ...

Assuming the new hard drive has been low-level
formatted and high-level formatted (from DOS) it
requires one more thing to be used as a boot device:
A BOOT BLOCK

Has a boot block been properly installed?
