Mac's with a 56K appletalk connection regularly communicate on ethernets
with an adapter box. A commodore connection would not be much different
as hardware goes. On the other hand, Mac's have the appletalk
communication protocol built into the operating system.

Serial printers with speeds as low as 9600K with absolutely no network
communication capabilities also communicate on ethernets. In this case,
all the network hardware and software is in the adapter box. These
adapter boxes are usually configured and operated remotely. The printer
sees only it's normal serial communication. These, however, do not
usually do file sharing.
