Controlling the drive mechanism and communicating with the other CPU,
IIRC.

All the old IEEE drives used two system boards, one DOS board and one
controller board. The IEC drives control the mechanism with an IRQ
instead (or was it IEC communication?) and consequently have a much
simpler design.
