*afaik* you can do this fine, and there is no technical reason for the screen 
not to display whatever (valid) timing you program into the CRTC. somewhere i 
read that the reason for why they used 50 or 60 hz respectively was so when 
the screen is used in environment with neon light you will not get super 
annoying interferences - sounds convincing to me :)
