Philosophically, I think its worth the extra time to take a look at it. I realize this shares very little with uIEC, but I was in a similat position in 2007 or so. I had gotten quite far in implementing uIEC/DOS from scratch when I became aware of sd2iec. Initially, I continued on with uIEC/DOS, ignoring sd2iec because I didn't understand the code. Still, I finally realized the community would be better served if I helped add value to sd2iec than if I continued to go it alone. Maybe your situation is different, but I think all of these niche projects need to consider this aspect. Far too many projects die because there is only 1 developer/author, and no one to help. With sd2iec, at least there are a handful of folks who understand the code and can provide good comments on ideas. It's also more fun to work with others in developing code.
