C128/1571 burst mode is slow. It's about 3.5 KB/sec read, no faster for writes.

The hardware is capable of much more though. We have implemented 62.5 KB/sec reads (faster than raw media rate of 40 KB/s) in the ZoomFloppy with 1571.
