Strange. But I just checked, and at least the DOS is included in VICE, it's 
8kB in size, unlike the 4040 DOS with 12kB. And at least in DOS 2.7 of a 
SFD1001 the formatter and disk layout is stored in the DOS ROM, not the 
controller ROM. In the 1kB controller ROM only the most basic and hardware 
dependant code is stored, the formatter is executed from the common RAM. (now 
we know why the 1541 does this. Again inherited from the dual CPU drives).
