I was a bit surprised to see the _specific_ questions in this thread
asked seriously. The command strings described thus far require the
record length to be explicitly marked _as_ the record length because
the numbers in question are the PETSCII character codes for the DOS
wildcards '*' and '?'.

I'm further surprised that the wildcards stop working if the drive
number is explicitly prefixed. I vaguely recall that asking for a
directory listing gives different responses for "[drivenumber]:$" as
opposed to just "$"; maybe that is related?
