REL record length 42?

Someone on Facebook just asked why creating a REL file with record
length 42 generated a syntax error DOS error code, and I thought they
must be putting in the command wrong.

I tried it on real HW here (64/1541) and to my surprise, it fails.  41
and 43 work, but 42 (chr$(42) = '*', BTW) fails to create the file.

Is this a known bug, or is there a better way to create a REL file (I
used the 1541 manual's open 2,8,2,"relfile,l,"+chr$(42)) that does not
cause the issue?
