Just a shoot in the dark: Are you sure you don't overwrite anything
needed by your machine when you transfer more than $BFFF bytes? For
example, if you start at address $1000, it could be you overwrite your
VIC-II I/O space at $D000 going on.

Are you sure you enabled a "memory-only" configuration on your C128?
