Thanks to all for your input.  I went with the direct connection and all is 
well :) .

I'd recommend a good speaker system to all who haven't tried it!  After 
listening to my SID chips through a 1702 for years and years, I'm amazed -- 
even Loadstar's SIDPlayer songs have a bass voice I'd never realized was 
there.
