The 374 is an 8-bit latch. The LS is just the Low-power version. "S" stands
for "Scottkey" (???) ie. the name of the invertor of the very fast diode. So
LS means that it is the low-power fast version of the regular74374.
If the 74S374 doesn't drive the crystal directly (which I doubt from memory)
IMHO I don't see any reason why you could not use the LS, F or HCT version.
