You tried to win the argument by pointing out that commodore didn't survive.

Saving pennies when you're making a million of something, is a lot of pennies. This is something commodore engineers have spoken about a lot.

Products like the c64, c128, a500, a1200, cd32 all went through the process of trying to save pennies where possible. The CDTV did not, which basically killed it.

Sony are good at cost reduction too, all the PlayStation models went through various cost reduction measures. Some of them relied on Moore's law, but others were because of extra time available to redesign.

The later PlayStation 2 models ended up including an extra Power PC cpu that performed software work rounds for some of their other cost reductions (it gave them the freedom to move away from LSI for the IOP).
