It worked.  It is now confirmed that the "VIC-42" is a MOS 6500/1.

I haven't done a complete disassembly of it, but I did check the dump by 
following the reset vector.  It leads to 6502 code that starts by clearing 
decimal mode and setting the stack pointer, as one would expect.
