Right, you can easily compare it to other chips that have been
previously decapped. But I don't think the 1541 gate array has been
decapped and the 1542 gate array could look entirely different.

So a decap will certainly give more information, but we can't predict
what that information will be and whether it will be enough to draw a
conclusion.

One outcome is that we'll be able to reproduce the functionality but
still not actually know what it's for.

It could just be a mask rom.
