Just the > "UNIX shell account" puzzles me. Does this mean you need to hook up your C64 > to a LINUX-PC (or whatever) first? It is simply not necessary for your own computer to do all the work of communicating. All you really need is a screen to display information and a serial connection. This is especially true if you only need text. I personally use such a connection for most of my internet access. I usually use my PC with Procomm Plus terminal software, but I can also do it from my C64 with Novaterm. The service I dial into is a Unix server. Once logged on, I can remotely run Unix applications, Lynx for HTTP and Pine for e-mail. This does not give me direct access to images, but I can download and view them offline. This may seem like a disadvantage, but the connection is much faster and most of the images are advertising anyway. The C64 is particularly bad at handling these images, and I do all images through my PC. - This message was sent through the cbm-hackers mailing list.
