To allow people to access the BBS from the Internet, not via the telephone
network.  By the way, in 1997 or 1998, when this subject came up on
comp.sys.cbm, I made some experiments and was able to configure Kermit so
that I could telnet to a device attached to the serial port of my Linux
box.  It wasn't too difficult, and no source code needed to be changed.
