Those early 2001's had an interesting difference.  The contacts for the 
cassette recorder connector were on the bottom of the board. The ones on 
the top of the board were not connected to anything.  Later models had the 
functional contacts on the top of the board.  The cassette recorder that came 
with it had contacts to match the connector. If you tried to use a 
recorder from a later PET, nothing would happen. This was very 
frustrating, having to find the correct recorder for an odd computer. I 
finally had to drill a hole through the contacts and solder a wire to 
connect both contacts.
