I agree, and think that there isn't much spirit related to a simple
three port PIO chip in a hires card, but the video generation hardware
(especially as seen from the software/firmware) is definitively part of
the spirit.

Also it's more "authentic" to use components that were available at the
time, which the 8255 definitively were.
