Well - it somehow worked so it must have used the ROM. In one way or another.

Now that adds even more to the puzzle. I did buy original back then. At least that's what I need to believe as I bought them from one of my long-term German suppliers. They came in the packages with manual and stuff. I can't say now where those are (if at all) but I don't expect it was any "cracked" version. The labels say 6.11 if that changes anything? Maybe the protection was added later?

Yes, the guy said it was needed for boards that originally used smaller ROMs. Not sure if that applies to the "Combos" I had. Don't you / anyone happen to have one of those at hand so that we could have a closer look at?
