Yeah the 6502 as a response to motorola law suit is a myth.

The 6501 and 6502 were talked about months before the 6501 launched & 
Motorola only got involved months after they had both launched.

The 6501 was pulled, but chuck peddle always said they didn't care as it 
was just a backup in case people refused to redesign their boards. It 
turned out that people didn't care about it and just wanted the 6502 anyway.
