Later chips had a 'R0' on them if they are the first silicon, maybe MOS 
didn't do that at that time. It would still indicate that the 7501R1 has 
some subtle changes to the older 7501. Did you measure the current they 
draw?

I remember my 7501R1 drawing 20mA less than the 8501R1 and 8501R4 I have.
