I once saw a modem interface that used the user port. It used the shift
register. There were a few diodes on the user port connector and it
connected directly to the modem. I don't remember any more than that.

I have a "SADI" device. It has IEEE488, serial, and parallel ports and
can communicate between any of them. I have used it to connect my PET to
my PC. It's capabilities are limited. Although I can receive data from
the PET using a terminal program, sending back to the PET failed, probably
for lack of a good terminal program on the PET.

Now all you have to do is get it to work. My 8250's are not working more
than they are working.
