& command

USR files starting with "&" can be loaded and executed in the drive by
issuing a command starting with "&".  That is not an extension; it's a
less-known feature.  Old enough 1541s will execute "&*" at startup if the
serial lines (DATA and CLK I think) are fiddled with appropriately.  
That's probably one reason why the manuals say that you should first power
up the computer and then the disk drives.
