I was wondering why did they use the fly-wire to "U36", which seems to be (despite the drawing) a ROM's VCC. Especially that

It definitely delivered some sort of BASIC extension with new commands to access the capabilities from BASIC. Those are described in the linked scans of the articles and in the linked manual

At some place it even mentions something about placing an EPROM but it looks like it was for the "D" version only. Quite confusing in fact..
