Why not use the old method of some fastloaders that disabled the screen 
but then changed the border color between 2 colors every few Bytes read 
which gave a rather dynamic pattern on the screen. Then change the 2 
colors for the next step. As long as anything's going on, there will be 
activity on the screen. And from the colors you know what step you're 
in. Just state this in the text before you start.
