Yes, I took a dead 6526 CIA and bent pins 22-39 out straight. Cut all 
the other pins away and, if you're ok with a bit of fine soldering, you 
have enough room to solder some wires for probes. I did this a couple of 
years back to build a keyboard dongle for the +4/116.

I guess other 40 pin DIL chips might work but I recall looking for 
something that was unlikely to mess with the signals.
