Probably for the reasons Gerrit described - EPROM can fail on occasions. I wonder what he used there. I thought it was an EPROM or another small footprint xPROM chip that could be placed on an adapter board with couple of jumpers to select the version for various target systems (one doesn't see it on the photo there) but of course it might be something else. I think I may just ask him ;-)
