Well, there had to be differences between the R3 and later revisions, 
otherwise they wouldn't have increased the R-number. :)

That the R5 runs hotter than the R3 suggests changes that allow the chip 
to produce faster LOW -> HIGH transitions (which are the main problem 
with NMOS if I understand that right)

But if you complain about the luma levels of the R3, you really need to 
see the output of an R1. It has only 5 luma levels instead of 9. That 
makes some things look rather strange.

There is another difference between the R1 and later revs that allows 
the R1 to be detected by software.
