I would imagine the breakdown to be roughly like this:

45% would never touch a soldering iron, not even for simple repair and 
cables
30% buy ready-made as long as the price is reasonable
20% will investigate if it is cheaper and easy enough to put together a 
product from own parts
5% prefers to do everything themselves and refuse to buy closed source 
products

Perhaps there should be more subgroupings, but generally people tend to 
prefer if someone does the job for them and compensates accordingly. Based 
on a such reasoning, the open sourcing is mostly a way to clear your 
conscience rather than a way of assembly most people will even consider to 
take.
