Before I handed the FUNET CBM archive over to Bo, someone uploaded some 
KIM-1 compatible tape routines that were written in Forth. That could be 
another option, if there is a Forth interpreter for AVR. But, I guess 
the C routines could be easier to work with, given that you already know 
C and there is a C toolchain for the 8-bit AVR family.
