I have never seen a C65 either, but I seem to remember from the manual 
that I read in 1996 that the hardware boots up in 64 mode. The KERNAL 
would switch it to the "native" mode by writing some magic to the 
VIC-III registers. This was supposedly in order to improve compatibility 
with cartridges and the like.
