Sorry if I didn't follow the discussion, but what does "look" mean? Are you 
opening up the chip and looking with an electron microscope, using some kind 
of oscilloscope or some other means to tap what's going on inside? I mean, 
is this a process other people could perform too or would you need samples 
of chips to analyze?

I don't know when is the next time I get to test my NTSC VIC-20 but I'll 
keep Marko's interlace program in mind just to see if I get it to do 
something spectacular.
