I don't know if this counts as simple, but it would be possible to write
a IEEE "debugger", which would log each IEEE call and write its
parameters to memory. You would just need to replace the TALK/LISTEN/...
vectors and point them to the debugging code, then they would jump to
the original routine. Then you would see what exact commands are sent
and where the process hangs. You could also repeat it on the PET and see
the difference, though I am not knowledgeable enough with PETs to do it.
