This triggered the following idea: what about using a bridge, like in
networks? A little device, a PIC with some drivers for example, that
amplifies the signals back- and forwards to another group of devices. By
using switches or simply by programming it, you can even tell it only to
react on a certain range.

Fast devices before the bridge, slow devices after the bridge. Problem
solved IMHO :)
