It allows to use eproms instead of roms. The 8K roms used by Commodore have 24
pins, while common 8K eproms (2764) have 28, so they're not pin compatible.

Looking at my own photos, I have to correct my last posting: At least the P500
on the photos does also have eproms. I wil have to check the other one.

Even the power supply looks like that one from the 610.

The crystal is only for the UART. You won't notice if it doesn't work, as long
as you don't use the serial port.
