They probably won't work. Remember, the BBS was initially set up on a
VoIP line, which was advertised to be compatible with fax modems. The
provider's VoIP codec probably implements a special pass-through for fax
modem and otherwise uses some speech codec that is incompatible with
2400bps modems.
