Weird behavior of C64 IEEE interfaces

Hallo allemaal,

Spiro asked if I had some C64 IEEE interfaces for him. At that moment I had no real IEEE drive at hand so I decided to fire up my 486 running CBM-HD. To my suprise both my DAMS IEEE interfaces acted weird. When asking for the directory from device 8, the PC showed that DAMS was trying to get some info regarding device 12. Only when connecting a real 4040 things worked as should. The DAMS interface is equiped with the 75160 and 76161.

Another interface acted even weirder: with or without a real 4040 it couldn't detect any drive at all. But it could detect the 4040 if my PC wasn't connected. This interface has an EPROM, a 6821 and two yellow coloured ICs onboard. IMHO the yellow IC's are nothing more the resistor arrays.

A third interface reacted, with or without 4040, as the DAMS interface without 4040.

I'm completely suprised by this behaviour and I'm certainly not pleased :( But the big question is: what is the reason for this behaviour, software, hardware or, in worst case, both ??? Your comments, ideas, suggestions or whatever are very appreciated!

During the search for Spiro's interfaces, I found (to my suprise)two VIC-1112's, the IEEE interface for the VIC-20. Unfortunately they appear not to be auto-starting. The onboard ROM is situated at $B000 so auto-start was impossible anyway. I tried SYS 54056 (= 11*4096) but the VIC freezes completely. But how to start it then, anybody?

Thanks for any info!
