I learned VHDL in a course in University some years ago. Anyway, I
recently found a book I believe is a good starting point:

Paul Molitor, Jörg Ritter: VHDL. Pearson Education, 2004 (?)
  http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/3827370477

Unfortunately, this book is in German, only.

Regards,
   Spiro.
