Conrad still sells them, according to their latest catalogus. They have
it still listed as a C64 userport plug...

To make things worse: fitting casings for cartridges can be bought there
too.

Very good Norwegian, I must say (as a Swede :-)
Well, here's a translation of what the boy sells:

"The following parts will be gone!
Give me an offer (preferably on the whole lot in one piece).
Everything is ICs for the Commodore C-64.

 8 pcs 6526 (I/O -- I guess he means CIA/VIA ?)
 2 pcs 6569 (old video chip -- VIC-II rev.1 ?)
 2 pcs 8565 (new video chip -- VIC-II rev.2 ?)
 1 pcs 6510 (old CPU)
 2 pcs 8500 (new CPU -- isn't that 8510 ?)
 3 pcs 8580 (new sound chip -- SID rev.2 ?)
 3 pcs 6581 (old sound chip -- SID rev.1 ?)
3 pcs 906114-01 (old PLA chip)
2 pcs 251913-01 (unknown chip, found in the new model)
1 pcs 901227-03 (BASIC ROM or similar in the old model)
4 pcs 41464 (RAM in the new model)
1 pcs 8701 (video timer? Used in both models)

Postage + other fees will be added on your offer,
but I send as cheap as possible.

(email cut away from original message by Cameron)"

Since he lives in Sweden, I would guess postage over the Atlantic
would cost more than it's worth (and you might find similar chips
on the other side).

/Anders Carlsson

Sorry, I must have left my brain in bed this morning. Basically, the
guy's selling the chips listed below. Make him an offer for all of it,
he's not interested in selling single chips.

I didn't want to post this directly to the newsgroup, since there
are quite a lot SPAM harversters around.

There's a mailinglist devoted to Commodore 8-bit computers,
and PET's in particular. You might want to visit
http://www.goldrush.com/~foxnhare/cbmhack.html first :)

To subscribe, send an e-mail containing the following text in the

I know from own experience that sending a small (<1KG) package to
the US isn't really that expensive, if you can cope with a
delivery time measured in months..

Four PAL VICs might make it worth it.

About $10 for a 0.5 kg (1 lbs) package.

Martijn> if you can cope with a delivery time measured in months..

It usually takes about 4-8 weeks when sending things from the US to
Sweden.

Hello all!

Mark wrote me a private message about the patents. He gave me the
technical descriptions how to fetch patents as TIFF images from IBM's
server. But as I'm very busy with my Master's Thesis right now (working
10-14 hours per day, 7 days per week), I would prefer if someone else did
the work. Either download all the relevant files and upload them to
ftp.funet.fi in one huge .tar file, or write a Bash script that downloads
them with lynx, so that I can execute the script on ftp.funet.fi.

Write me if you are interested, and I'll send the details to you. I hope
that I will have more time after mid-December, when I hopefully graduate.
But on the other hand, I already have n+1 Commodore-related projects
pending. :-)

	Marko

So how many games/demos don't work with JD enabled? So far everything
I've tried (a couple of the demos from JEZ' favourites page) has
worked flawlessly.
I just bought JD for my SX but it's broken -- disabling it with the
switch freezes the computer. Turning it on with it disabled gives me a
black screen. Writing a small program, a la

loop	inc $d020
	jmp loop

and flipping the switch freezes the computer. Any ideas? Kind of
sounds like it shorts +5V and GND, or maybe some address lines, but I
haven't looked into it yet.

PS: is there someone here with a working EPROM burner that would be
willing to burn two 27C128s for me?

Was the code run with interrupts disabled? Maybe the other half of the
EPROM is bad. (Normally these replacement ROMs have the original KERNAL
in one half and the replacement in the other half, and the switch simply
wires the highest address line to +5V or to GND.)

I think so, but I'll double check. Powering up with JD enabled,
switching it off and then resetting doesn't appear to do anything at
all. Flipping it back and resetting works.

Marko> Maybe the other half of the EPROM is bad.

Well, something's going on. A few broken bits shouldn't make the
computer freeze up like that though.

That's the way it's done, yes.

Yes, but you shouldn't wire the adress line alternatively to GND or VCC
with a switch, because during the switching process the address line is
somewhat undefined. It's much better to tie the address line to VCC with
a 4.7k or 10k pull up resistor and pull it to GND via the switch. I've
done this in my computer and almost never have any problems switching
between ROMs.

Marko, I just wanted to say that I am in the exact same boat, down
to the date. Avoiding 8-bit activities is a constant excercise in
temptation. If we both survive, I may have to fly out to Finland just
to shake your hand in triumph (and then beat you at Archon or similar :).

Hello Steve,

And don't forget that I'll be travelling 3 weeks in November. I must
practically finish my thesis by the end of this month. I have written
20k+ lines of C++ code (>600kB in size), but only a few pages of the
thesis so far. Hmm, should I maybe write a Postscript driver that uses a
8x8 VIC-20 font on a 600dpi printer so that I could include the source
code as an appendix to my thesis? :-)

I may have a conference in your side of the Atlantic next summer. So, you
will only have to fly to there. :-)

	Marko

In my experience: zero. In four years of constant use, I have not had a
single program which only worked by disabling JD -- game, demo, or
otherwise. I have had programs fail with the internal drive on my
128D (Hacker, in particular), but never JD. It is awesome. I have
heard the rumor that it needs to be disabled for a few programs, but
I have never once heard the name of those programs, and if they exist
I think you could count them on one hand.

Anyways, I hope you get the problem fixed!

I can offer a stupid suggestion: put the old ROMs back in, to make
sure it's the JD ROM.

OK. Sounds like I won't bother and just go on using it with JD perma-
nently installed. If I really need the original ROMs I always have the
original, and, um two more 64s :)
Actually I'm amazed that JD works with my FC3 cartridge. They even
cooperate -- FC3 hogs the F-keys (and I think I prefer that) but all
the JD @-commands still work.

Stephen> Anyways, I hope you get the problem fixed!

Well, at least I managed to find the problem -- CMD managed to burn
JiffyDOS in the lower half and the Basic ROM in the upper half. Small
wonder it didn't boot with that.
