Hey Larry,
that solution is mentioned in the link Niklas has just sent. I thought about it, but the reason I dislike it is, generally I dislike modding vintage hardware. However, even if I did what you propose, there's no reason to cannibalize a C-64, when such sockets can be cheaply bought in stores like PARTCO (like Radio Shack).
