Well I seem to have remembered wrong... It was pin 2 (+5V) that didn't
work... That makes it rather tough to work with the datasette. :-)

Yes, according to the pinout found in manuals it does at least. Notice
that pin 1 is ground (but it will probably prevent your tape drive from
working no matter what's missing). From the VIC-20 PRG:

1 2 3 4 5 6          A-1 = GND   B-2 = +5V    C-3 = Motor
A B C D E F          D-4 = Read  E-5 = Write  F-6 = Switch

(not sure if this design is from the computer or connector view, though)
