I don't have my VIC hooked up right now, but I configured xvic for 3k 
expansion and attached the two ROM dumps, trying to simulate the 
setup you suspected it to have. I think you are right: The assembler 
started and I got the 3071 BYTES FREE message.

The PEEKs reported:
 1           4
 3           4

What does that mean?
