It is all coming back to me now.
IIRC, the first issue of the 1670 always answered a ring on the phone
line. (I had to buy a ring suppression toggle (from Radio Shack) to
prevent the modem from answering voice calls.
The second issue of the 1670 was intended to correct this bug.
