This reminds me of a teletype repair where the ascii characters have a bit stuck hi ir low. So, you'd compare the cbm ascii value of the character you're getting with the character you're expecting. See if other characters are impacted to determine the pattern. Use this info to track down the fault i.e. which data line is sticking hi or low. Also, is it a screen ram or general ram issue, you can test for that.
