I was using 10uF/16v tantalum capacitors. The MAX232 was able to power
even my biggest trackball using the same capacitors. ...Did you make
some experiences with such a circuit, should I try for example, 100uF
capacitors in my discrete voltage quadrupler? Should it increase the
output current so much that it could reach 10-15 milliampers?

Yes, but I want to avoid coils if it is possible.
