Your strategy is more likely to shield you from buyers remourse, but 
it's proven that people are prepared to pay more when they see the price 
going up.

I regularly will start off saying I'm not going to pay more than x, but 
after watching each auction go for higher and higher amounts then 
eventually your perception changes.
