That is my recollection as well. GenLock would work straight up without 
special software.

I also remember well that grounding the HSYNC or VSYNC pins would freeze 
the video generation, and freeze the machine (because it would normally 
wait for vblank when blitting graphics).

How the time flies.. That was almost 16 years ago.
